Well, two more entries for the List of Awesome Things I Didn’t Know Existed: 1) An irresistibly titled odds’n’sods compilation from Twilight Sad. 2) Various exceptional unreleased tracks appearing on said compilation, most notably a cover of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ ever-bewitching “Modern Romance” off the ever-rockin’ Fever To Tell. Sure, there’s also a punishing take on Joy Division’s “Twenty Four Hours” available for your comparative needs, but something about this across-the-pond borrowing captivates more, our gloomy Scots ditching their signature guitar squall to create something rickety and rusty and, with the aid of that beguiling accent, globally concerned about an American inability to love. What a weird, morbid distance 2009 is from 2003: you can sense this song trying to reach back through those six turbulent years, to a place deeply acquainted with fear but clinging fast to soluble trust.
