Lush /// “Monochrome” /// Spooky

The case for CDs: having a physical copy lying around makes you more likely to play that album that deserves a revisit. I was in a Split mood last night, and push comes to shove, I’ll take that disc over Spooky on the strength of the suicidal “Undertow” alone. But Spooky’s got “Monochrome” as a closer, possibly the best shoegazer LP comedown ever committed to tape, and after the chrome pop sensibility of Split, I needed it all the more. The swaying refrain, the fingers and tentacles of Cocteau Twins melody, the reverb-spangled mini-dawns: they’re all the more affecting after the glare of a bratty sneer Lush was developing on their way to the mindfuck swan song known as Lovelife.
