Windy & Carl — “My Love” — Songs For The Broken Hearted

I can think of no song that better captures the eerie strains of Friday the 13th, the vast array of emotions brought to bear on Valentine’s day and the surprising weight of our dead presidents all at once.  Michigan’s Windy & Carl, an actual couple that actually goes by those actual names, have been on a deep-space mission for 15 years now; you can always find them in a state of suspended animation, communicating through frosted glass in glittering imperfections.  The gently descending bass here is a sonar signal (whether submarine or whale) that searches for life in vain, Windy’s voice not merely spectral but some psychic injunction—the voice in your head.  Plenty of bands treat love as more than a threadbare cliché, but it’s great to hear one whose cavernous sound makes room for all the doubt and wonder that come with it.
