“Cute”: a plus for clothes or interior design. An epithet for all other art. Weird, right? You can’t trust happiness in prose, painting or music, apparently. Bucolic, OK. Bright and rippling, all good. Introduce that saccharine aspect, though, and you risk everything. And once in a while, the payoff is worth it.
